GEF (Geotechnical Exchange Format) is a family of text-based file formats designed to standardize the exchange of geotechnical investigation data between software systems and organizations. The formats were created in the late 1990s to solve interoperability issues in Dutch geotechnical practice, where dozens of proprietary formats made data sharing between companies and software packages difficult. Before GEF, each drilling company and software vendor had their own format.
GEF solved a real interoperability problem and became institutionally embedded in Dutch geotechnical practice, but represents outdated technical approaches that modern formats are gradually replacing.
